One of the most frequently asked questions I get as an elementary library teacher is, "How do I know my child is understanding what they are reading?" I always suggest to people to return to basic story elements and remember that modeling for children is really important in developing a lifelong reader. Talking while reading something together is a great way to do this. Ask your learner about these story elements.

Also If you do read alouds with your child, please read one level higher than they are reading independently and stop and talk about it. One of my favorite read-alouds in The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. I read it to my 6 and 8 year old in a few nights and the lead character's voice is so clear throughout the story. What an inspiring piece of literature that is really enjoyed by people of all ages...check it out if you haven't yet!
